by Georgia Chioni

One may wonder what is the first thing that a person may notice in an outfit? The design itself? The pattern? The sewing techniques? Or the color? Well, it seems that the color would be the correct answer.

Our emotions, as well as our mental state is heavily influenced by colors. Fashion, thus, may become a great ally, as we can use the psychological benefits of color, by selecting colors that can uplift our spirit. In addition, the impression that we have for ourselves can be influenced by various types of style: dressing in clothes that give us confidence can improve our mental health and state of wellbeing.

Colors form part of our everyday life. They play major role in the selection of clothes we make, in a subconscious way. In the older times chromotherapy was used to heal people from their ailments. Colors evoke emotions. Some are also associated to seasonal changes, f.e. shades of brown and orange are related to fall.

People normally tend to use in their everyday life colors that have a positive impact on their mood and feelings. F.e.:

Red: Energy booster, passion, aggression

Yellow: Renders people happier

Blue: Calming effect

Green: Balance

White: Innocence

Pink: Romance & Kindness

Orange: Enthusiasm & Attention

Purple: Mystery & Wisdom

And what about black?

Black is the symbol for power and authority, timelessness and class. It implies for respect, dignity and elegance, this is why it is heavily related to anything luxurious. The ultimate choice for important events, to look classy and sophisticated.

Colors have also a significant cultural impact, as they have different meanings in various cultures. For example, while in India red implies purity, in South Africa it represents mourning. In addition, while yellow is a color of hope in the Western cultures, in Egypt it denotes mourning.
